When the very first day of the new year dawns, and God whispers, ‘See, I am doing a new thing!’ – how does that make you feel? Excited? Anxious? Curious?
‘Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.’ – Isaiah 43:18-19 NIV
This verse from Isaiah has been a constant companion since my college days, its meaning evolving with each season of my life. Different seasons, different meanings. Today, it resonates with a newfound clarity. There are three key words that stand out: the ‘new thing,’ the ‘wilderness,’ and the ‘wasteland.’ These seem to be the focal points of God’s message right now. The New Thing, simply put, something fresh and unexpected. The Wilderness represents challenges, difficult times, and the unknown. The Wasteland symbolizes barrenness, lack of productivity, and areas of stagnation. These definitions prompt me to a deeper introspection with questions like:
What is the ‘new thing’ God desires for me?
What challenges am I currently facing in my life?
Where in my life do I feel barren or unproductive?
I am reminded that God is constantly at work, even when I feel lost or stagnant.
It’s a gentle invitation to let go of the past, to embrace the present with curiosity, and to trust that God is guiding me towards a future filled with grace, growth, and the quiet assurance of His loving presence.

The promise of a ‘new thing’ offers a beacon of hope, a reminder that even in the midst of challenges and uncertainties, there is always the possibility of something beautiful and unexpected. I also hope the same goes for you. May you be reminded that God is always with you, in the hills and valleys, offering His hand to guide you through the waters and reveal the greater purpose He has for you in this season. May this bring you hope as you journey through the new year!
